Abstract:
Securing energy supply has become a central task for a vast number of states in the last decades. Important changes in energy politics can be observed in
Russia, Europe, and China. While Europe, on the one hand, seeks further independence from Russian energy imports, Russia, on the other hand, increasingly turns
towards energy-hungry China and vice versa. Against the background of the severe challenges which climate change presents and, at the same time, the finiteness
of fossil resources, Europe is striving to make their economy energy efficient and promote alternative energy resources. Can Europe’s experience with energy
efficiency and renewables serve as a blueprint for Russia and China? This Roundtable will address numerous issues related to these current developments and
seeks to provide profound analysis of the peculiarities of Russia-EU-China energy relations from a political and economic perspective. In awareness of the
particular importance of these developments – once again in the spotlight in the wake of current events in Japan – the Higher School of Economics with
the kind support of the Friedrich-Ebert Foundation, Moscow, dedicate this roundtable to energy issues.
